The colonial myth of the "headhunter"
For generations, the Momogun Rungus people of northern Borneo have been labelled "headhunters" — a term weaponised by colonial powers to justify intervention and to portray indigenous communities as savage. This narrative erased the legal and spiritual systems that governed Momogun society.
Under Momogun Rungus law, there was no tradition of roaming Borneo to behead people. The Momogun Rungus did not practise random violence. What existed was a structured legal response to the violation of their land and sovereignty.
Mitos kolonial "pemburu kepala"
Selama bergenerasi, bangsa Momogun Rungus di utara Borneo telah dilabelkan "pemburu kepala" — istilah yang digunakan kuasa kolonial untuk mewajarkan campur tangan dan menggambarkan masyarakat asal sebagai ganas. Naratif ini menghapuskan sistem undang-undang dan kerohanian yang mengawal masyarakat Momogun.

What is Pangazou?
The concept of Pangazou originated from the duty to defend Tanah Momogun. When outsiders violated the land, the Momogun received a spiritual message from Kinoringan Lzumaag — the spiritual authority — to carry out Mangazou (the act of Pangazou).
Under the religious laws of Izabus, this response was triggered specifically when an outsider dug into Momogun land deeper than two feet. Such an act was considered a direct attack on Momogun sovereignty, because only the Momogun had the right to dig the land through the authority of Kinoringan Lzumaag.
Apa itu Pangazou?
Konsep Pangazou berasal daripada kewajipan mempertahankan Tanah Momogun. Apabila pihak asing melanggar tanah tersebut, bangsa Momogun menerima mesej kerohanian daripada Kinoringan Lzumaag — kuasa kerohanian — untuk melaksanakan Mangazou (tindakan Pangazou).
Di bawah hukum-hukum agama Izabus, tindak balas ini dicetuskan secara khusus apabila pendatang luar menggali Tanah Momogun lebih daripada dua kaki. The laws behind Pangazou
Territorial sovereignty. Tanah Momogun was governed by its own land laws. Foreign intrusion — specifically digging more than two feet — was treated as an act of aggression.
Spiritual mandate. The directive to carry out Pangazou came from Kinoringan Lzumaag. It was not a personal decision but a communal duty received through spiritual authority.
Protection from contamination. If the Momogun did not respond, it was believed the land would become contaminated, bringing disease to both the intruders and the Momogun people themselves.
Only against outsiders. The Pangazou was directed only at mizonvaig — foreigners from overseas. It was strictly forbidden to carry out Pangazou against fellow Momogun.
Trade laws governed contact. Interaction with outsiders was regulated by barter trade laws (Hukum-Hukum Berdagang). Violence was a last resort when those laws were broken.
Undang-undang di sebalik Pangazou
Kedaulatan wilayah. Tanah Momogun ditadbir oleh undang-undang tanah tersendiri. Pencerobohan asing — khususnya menggali lebih daripada dua kaki — dianggap sebagai serangan.

Understanding the Tangkob within its proper context is essential to dismantling the colonial "headhunter" narrative and recognising the Momogun Rungus as a people with a sophisticated legal tradition.

Tangkob ialah artifak Momogun Rungus — objek fizikal yang berkait dengan amalan dan budaya Pangazou. Ia berdiri sebagai bukti material sistem perundangan-kerohanian berstruktur, bukan trofi keganasan.
Memahami Tangkob dalam konteks sebenarnya adalah penting untuk membongkar naratif kolonial "pemburu kepala" dan mengiktiraf bangsa Momogun Rungus sebagai masyarakat dengan tradisi perundangan yang canggih.
Sovereignty, not savagery
The labelling of indigenous peoples as "headhunters" served colonial purposes: it made intervention seem necessary and civilising. In truth, the Momogun Rungus operated within a framework of land laws, trade regulations, and spiritual governance that predated colonial contact.
Pangazou was not about aggression. It was about a people's right to defend their land, their laws, and their way of life — a right recognised in international indigenous rights frameworks today, but denied to them by the narratives written about them.
To call Pangazou "headhunting" is to strip it of its legal context and to repeat the colonial distortion.
Kedaulatan, bukan kebuasan
Pelabelan masyarakat asal sebagai "pemburu kepala" memenuhi tujuan kolonial: ia menjadikan campur tangan kelihatan perlu dan bertamadun. Sebenarnya, Momogun Rungus beroperasi dalam rangka undang-undang tanah, peraturan perdagangan, dan pentadbiran kerohanian yang mendahului hubungan kolonial.
